MC Tutoring - You're Not Alone!

Homework. Labs. Papers. Tests. These four words alone can make Mississippi College students tremble in their Chacos. At times, college can seem like a towering mountain of due dates and never-ending projects. No matter how smart you are, at some point, you will feel overwhelmed.

“Gee, thanks for the positive vibes,” you might be thinking. And you’re right, I probably shouldn’t be such a pessimist; especially when Mississippi College has so many ways to help students who are afraid of an academic avalanche.

Tutoring is one massive way that MC helps its students achieve academic success. All Mississippi College tutoring is 100% free to enrolled students, and is available at convenient hours all across campus. “But what kind of tutoring does MC even have?”

I’m glad you asked!

The Writing Center

Located on the first floor of the Leland Speed Library, the MC Writing Center is a friendly and open environment. It is here where you can find skilled tutors who can help you improve your writing skills through brainstorming, proofreading, formatting, analyzing, and so much more! All of these tutors have been trained to meet you where you are at in the writing process. Also, don’t think this is limited to English papers; Biology lab reports, PowerPoint presentations, even things like composing a speech or poem are things they can help you with. You name it, they can help (seriously, they have even helped out with math homework before).

You can either make an appointment or do a walk-in appointment. They even offer online tutoring!

Biology and Chemistry Tutoring

This one is for all of the Bio and Chemistry majors out there. The schedule for Biology tutoring varies based on your instructor, but the location remains the same: Hederman 103. This kind of tutoring has an intense focus on Bio-specific concepts, and tutoring is conducted by former students who have been through the courses and understand where the current students are going through.

Similarly, the Chemistry department is specific by classes as well, and even divide their hours up into individual courses. Meaning that you won’t be going to to just a general Chemistry tutoring session, but one that is specific to your current course. This is both helpful and a relief to students who have a busy schedule.

If you’re like me, then you are absolutely helpless when it comes to math. Or, maybe you're on the other end of the spectrum and you are a math wizard. Either way, there is tutoring available in the MCC to ALL students. Whether you’re tackling College Algebra or a 400 level class, there is help readily available to help you crunch the numbers. Yeah, I went there.

Math tutoring is available in MCC 116 at these hours:

Monday, Wednesday: 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, Thursday: 12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

At first glance, Business might seem like a strange field to be tutored in. But when you consider the wide scope of business courses MC offers (Finance, Accounting, Economics, and CPA to name a few), it makes a lot of sense. From Economic concepts to Financial equations, the School of Business has you covered.

The business school also has a lab with a built in Graduate Assistant ready to help walk you through anything you might need on Monday - Thursdays from 2:00 PM - 8 PM every week.

Business tutoring is also available in Self 102 at these times:

Monday-Thursday 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Monday & Tuesday 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Wednesday & Thursday 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

This is only a small glimpse of all of the tutoring options available for MC students. I didn’t even mention fields like Nursing, Kinesiology, Graphic Design, Computer Science, History, Christian Studies, and Communication. No matter how overwhelmed you feel, no matter how daunting coursework may seem, you can find comfort in the fact that your university is here to help!
