A couple of months ago I found myself in a conference room with my boss, an English professor, and a handful of MC students. We were in there talking about what it means to be an MC student, Dr. Miller facilitating the questions, the students responding, and me sitting in a corner writing down everything they said. At the time, I was working with my boss towards composing a script for the newest admissions video.
That focus group was one of a handful of them that we hosted in order to make the most authentic video MC had ever produced. We didn't want to develop something based on what sounds good, what prospective students want to hear, or what would make MC seem like the best college in the whole world. We just wanted to be honest. We wanted to hear from students and we wanted to translate their words into the script.
This is what we came up with:
The heartbeat of what I heard from students is this:
Mississippi College is an experience.
Yes, MC is a block of buildings and it is made up of a few thousand students and staff members. Yes, it has its faults. Yes, it is a place to come and get an diploma. But it is so much more.
My time at MC has grown me more than I could ever imagine. The staff here has invested in me and pushed me to become an adult, Christ-like, and educated version of the girl I was when I got here. My friends here have become like family. The campus has become a second home to me and MC has become a part of who I am.
When I got to hear from students about their time at MC, I heard stories that were different from mine and stories that were the same. I heard from freshmen that are still adjusting to college life and seniors who are anticipating what it'll be like when they leave. One student talked about their experience with the professors and others spoke of the lifelong friends they've made here. No one claimed MC to be a perfect school, but we all agreed that MC is not just a school, it's an experience.
Our video doesn't depict the daily life of an MC student. It doesn't express what it feels like when you have five tests in two days or when you're homesick. But I can promise you that it shows you what it's like to embrace life as a Mississippi College student. It's an experience. And we want you to come learn that for yourself.
