Meet Dr. Kucia. She is a professor in the Communication department and the sponsor for Swannanoa. She devotes herself to not only helping students with their academic journey, but also with their spiritual well-being. Her favorite thing about MC that she is free to share her faith here.
Dr. Kucia came into Mississippi College with 15 years of "real world experience." This includes everything from being a DJ to being a stay-at-home mom. She also did adjunct teaching for several years before she was offered a position at MC. She feels that she has had the opportunity to explore different paths of life and is happy being here at MC. Even though teaching is the one thing she said she would never do, she feels like everything she did before accepting a position at Mississippi College God used to prepare her for this career. She reached a point in her life where she realized that God put her exactly where He wanted her and this is what He made her for.
Often times people draw inspiration from the positive people in their lives. While Dr. Kucia does look to the teachers she had that went above and beyond for inspiration, she also looks to teachers who tore students down to know what not to do. Growing up, she had a Math teacher that used to criticize students in front of the whole class and to this day, it affects the way she feels about Math. This has taught her how to not embarrass her students. On the other hand, teachers that invested in her beyond academics inspired her to strive to invest in others.
The main goal that Dr. Kucia has is to make students feel comfortable when they otherwise would not feel that way. When she was younger, she had braces on her legs. She referred to these as the braces that Forrest Gump wore. She began to think of how to make other people feel comfortable when they wouldn't normally be because she knows what it is like to always feel uncomfortable. She receives affirmation when students come back and say that she really pushed them or thank her for helping them with something that had nothing to do with class
Dr. Kucia teaches Public Relations courses at MC, but the course that most people will take from her is Public Speaking. Many people are terrified of speaking in front of people, and Dr. Kucia knows this because she was once like this herself. When she was in college, she told her professor she absolutely could not speak in front of people. This teacher took her into the classroom, told her to look at the floor, and asked her if she saw anything on the floor. She explained that there is no hole that will open up and swallow her and that should not be afraid of doing speeches. To this day, Dr. Kucia uses this story to assure her students the way that her teacher assured her.
Dr. Kucia's advice to students is to not get so caught up in trying to do what needs to be done that you miss out on life.
Life doesn't always go as planned and she wants her students to be adaptive to that. She says to never become someone else's dream and to continue to do what you feel is right until you don't feel that way anymore. Doors will open, and you will know what to do. This is how you do relationships, as well. She relates because she remembers how hard it was to not know what to do.
Whether or not Dr. Kucia considers herself profound, her students see her as more than just a professor. She not only inspires others to excel academically, but also to grow in their faith. Her humility and passion for her students shows that she is indeed profound.
