Hello world, Andrew here writing to those interested in getting into medical school and learning all that there is to learn about biology (And if you're not an aspiring scientist, that's okay; most of us aren't). The Biology Department at Mississippi College is impressive, to say the least. Let's explore.
The Biology department at MC is located in Hederman Science Building and our new state of the art Medical Science Building. As a biology major, you will be able to participate in courses like general biology, cell biology, genetics, and so much more.
There are four focuses to choose from if you want to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biology:
- Medical Sciences
- Science Education
- General Biology
One of the biggest perks of taking Biology courses at MC is the opportunity to take Med School level classes as an undergraduate student. The program allows for students to take these high level classes and therefore be ahead of their peers when they arrive at Med school. As an undergraduate student, you even have the opportunity take the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) subject board exams (also known as the "shelf" exams).
The Biology Department also houses a wet cadaver lab, which is a unique trait among undergraduate programs in the country.
My friend, Sam Moser, is a Senior in the Biology Department this year and he has absolutely loved his experience. Here's what he had to say about it:
"Besides the incredible, encouraging group of people that comprise the student body of MC, the Biology Department has been the greatest part of my MC experience. Over the past four years, I have experienced some of the craziest highs and lows, but I have had professors believe in me through it all. They have not only helped me grow academically, but also emotionally and spiritually. One extremely influential professor changed my view on everything when he told me, “Sam, this is not going to be easy. It’s often going to be pretty difficult, but know this: NOTHING worth doing is ever easy.” Over the past few years, I have learned more than I ever imagined about my Creator. I have had professors who loved what they were teaching, and in turn, caused me to love it as well. I was able to learn what most students have to wait for medical school to learn, and was even able to dissect a human cadaver in the most state-of-the-art Gross Anatomy Laboratory in the entire Mid-South. I can not imagine earning a Medical Science degree anywhere else, and am extremely grateful to the amazing experience I have had here. As I look back, I can not fathom what things would be like without the influence the Biology Department has had not only on my MC experience, but also my life in general."
